You may think that entering your essay into an essay competition would be a great way to promote yourself and win a little extra cash… and you are right. Once you sit down to write the essay however, you may find it more difficult than you once thought. In order to win an essay competition or at least be one of the top contenders it’s important to follow a few simple rules.

First plan your essay appropriately. It will be beneficial to establish a timeline for the essay writing process so that you have enough time to complete your essay before the due date. Sit down and examine the essay and how long you feel it will take to complete. Focus on the three primary areas within your essay: the introduction, body and conclusion. Make sure that your essay follows this format in order to establish a clear progression of thought throughout your writing. Write a couple of drafts, re-examining the topic and outlining areas of improvement or areas that you like. Remember that proof reading is critical in the essay writing process. If you have been examining your essay for some time do take a break and come back to it when your mind is fresh. Reading your essay aloud can help you tighten up sentences that may sound awkward or unnecessary.

It’s pivotal during the writing process, aside from correcting grammatical and structural inaccuracies, to establish a tone or presence for your essay. Think of the tone or presence as your essays “voice.” If the essay doesn’t have a distinct voice than it might be harder to win over your audience or allow your audience to follow your line of thought. When you take the time to really commit to the writing process your end result will be much more formulated and coherent. Make sure that your style of writing is clear and unique. This will give you an advantage among other essays that may sounds dull or lackluster.

Make sure that your essay remains on topic and focused, by answering the outlined question(s). Take your time during the writing process and provide your audience with the information they want.
