This review is from: Apple iPad 2 MC770LL/A Tablet (32GB, Wifi, Black) NEWEST MODEL (Personal Computers)
i bought this from apple because amazon didn’t have it yet. I am middle- aged, love my nano, a kindle devotee from the first days, don’t have a smart phone, and am a pc user. at first i was awed by the touchscreen and the resolution quality. images are gorgeous. but now, it is really annoying. too often the screen doesn’t respond, and then reacts when you don’t even know you’re touching it. the word processing function has been limited and limiting from the start, for someone accustomed to microsoft.
if you think in buying the ipad you are getting a compact, fast, light computer, you are not. it IS fast. a computer it is not. no flash player is definitely a hinderance. what it is great for is apps, games, (although the screen has been frustrating there too), watching movies and tv shows, some browsing on the internet, and as a portable photo album, because images are truly fantastic on the ipad. i find the screen very fatiguing on my eyes, and have the brightness level down almost as far as it can go. i would never dream of reading a book on it. kindle has nothing to worry about, as far as the ipad as a reading device. the fact i can’t see the ipad screen outside, even in the shade, is also unfortunate, but i get it, that’s a backlit screen.
i am submitting this review not to bash apple, but to clarify a bit to people not familiar with macs and/or touchscreens what this device is about. would i buy this device again? not unless it sold for maybe $300. it is more a toy than a tool.

The new MacBook Air is up to 2.5x faster than before. It features the latest Intel Core i5 dual-core processor, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O, a backlit keyboard, and OS X Lion, the next major release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system. MacBook Air also comes standard with flash storage, so it boots up in seconds, launches apps quickly, and wakes from sleep in an instant. And a long-lasting battery powers MacBook Air for up to 5 hours and offers up to 30 days of standby time. All in a durable unibody design that’s thin, light, and ready for anything.

The MacBook Air with 11.6-inch screen–light, thin, and strong enough to take with you wherever you go (view larger).

This version of the MacBook Air (model MC968LL/A) sports a 11.6-inch high-resolution display, 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor, 64 GB of flash memory storage, 2 GB of RAM, and an Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated graphics processor (see full specifications below). It also comes with the iLife software suite, which includes the latest versions of iPhoto, iMovie, and GarageBand.

OS X Lion

Every Mac comes with OS X Lion, the latest release of the world’s most advanced desktop operating system. With over 250 features including Multi-Touch gestures, Mission Control, full-screen apps, and Launchpad, OS X Lion takes the Mac further than ever.

Key OS X Lion Features

Mission Control provides a bird’s-eye view of everything running on your Mac.

Launchpad puts all your apps front and center for easy access.

View apps full screen and switch between them with a swipe.

Interact with your Mac using intuitive new Multi-Touch gestures.

Key Features Flash Memory Storage

By replacing the standard spinning hard drive typically found in laptops (as well as desktop PCs) with flash memory, the MacBook Air delivers an almost instantaneous boot-up when you open the display, as well as faster application launches and snappier overall performance. Additionally, Apple has shed the enclosure that typically surrounds flash memory (usually about the same size as a standard hard drive), thus giving it a smaller footprint and helping to decrease the size of the MacBook Air.

The ultimate do-everything, take-everywhere notebook(view larger). Revolutionary Thunderbolt Technology

Developed by Intel with collaboration from Apple, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O (input/output) technology delivers an amazing 10 gigabits per second of transfer speeds in both directions. Built into the MacBook Air, the Thunderbolt port allows you to connect to new Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals as well as existing USB and FireWire peripherals using simple adapters. You’ll be able to move data up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and more than 12 times faster than with FireWire 800, and you can daisy-chain up to six high-speed devices without using a hub. Thunderbolt also supports DisplayPort for high resolution displays and works with existing adapters for HDMI, DVI, and VGA displays.

Glass Multi-Touch Trackpad and Backlit Keyboard

With the smooth, glass Multi-Touch trackpad, the MacBook Air makes it easy to navigate OS X Lion and your software applications. You can pinch, swipe or rotate images on the display screen with the brush of two fingers, or add more digits for a four-fingered vertical swipe to open Expose and quickly glance at all of your open windows.

Spacious, full-sized keyboard with backlighting (view larger).

In spite of its compact size, the MacBook Air has a full-size keyboard for comfortable, natural typing, and it’s backlit so you can keep typing in even the dimmest light.

Integrated FaceTime Webcam

You’ll be able to easily connect with friends, family, and business colleagues using the MacBook Air’s FaceTime camera, which is integrated into the thin bezel above the display. And with Apple’s FaceTime application, you’re not limited to video chats with other Macs–you can now make video calls to iPhone and iPod touch users (Wi-Fi connection required for mobile users).

Apple MacBook Air SuperDrive If you want to burn discs or install software you already own on disc, consider the external USB-based MacBook Air SuperDrive. It takes up very little space and easily connects to Mac mini with a single USB cable–there’s no separate power adapter.

Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter Use the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter to connect your MacBook Air to a 30-inch display that includes a DVI connector, such as the 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display.

This review is from: Apple MacBook Air MC968LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION) (Personal Computers)
Worth every penny. The display is gorgeous. Sound quality is impressive. The multi-gesture touch pad is very easy to use, and makes me long for the wireless touchpad to accompany my iMac. The battery life is not as impressive as is listed. I suppose it might last longer if I were to give in to the Power Saver settings, but I love a bright display. The 11 inch screen seems larger than it actually is. The full-screen options combined with the ease of zooming and navigating through windows make it feel like a full-size screen. I was hesitant to go the Air route, but I’m so pleased that I did. The portability didn’t compromise the power, and once you see how light and slim this thing is in person, you’ll understand!

This is the ideal laptop for students and commuters!

UPDATE:
I’ve been using this laptop for a few months now, and I am still as in love with it as the day we met. There are a few merits that I failed to appreciate by the time I wrote the first review. I am a law student, so I have to do a great deal of typing on this computer. There is something about the keyboard on the Macbook air that makes it extremely comfortable. I guess the best way to put it is that it’s as if this keyboard requires just the right amount of pressure. (I felt as weird typing that as you felt reading it.) The keys are not overly-sensitive, but you barely have to push them. It’s just right. I’ve had pain in the past from typing, but I don’t get it at all with the keyboard on my Air.

Another thing I had failed to appreciate is how quickly the computer boots up. It goes like this: Press power button. Take one drink of coffee. There’s your desktop. Ready to go.

Lastly, though it’s been around for a while on Mac laptops, this is my first experience with the magnetic power cord. I’ve had no problems with it (I’ve heard they don’t last long…I’ll keep you posted.). That being said, I have experienced, first hand, the benefits of it. My 7 year-old nephew was running around like 7 year-old boys do, and he caught the cord with his foot. The cord detached just like it’s supposed to, and neither my nephew nor the computer fell. It was beautiful! .

This review is from: Apple iPad (first generation) MB292LL/A Tablet (16GB, Wifi) (Personal Computers)
I got a WiFi, non-3G version, the cheapest one; I don’t need GPS and don’t want to pay AT&T any more than I absolutely have to, and don’t want another monthly subscription, either. Got plenty of those, it seems. And, at least for now, I don’t need all that storage.

I’m not what one would consider a “Power User” of the iPad. I use a laptop constantly, and bought the iPad a couple of months ago because it is great looking and I was curious about it and I got a case of The Wants. I’ve been involved with computers since the mid-60′s when I first was employed as an IBM 360 (and 1401 before that) programmer, and I’ve continued messing with them pretty heavily ever since, though I changed careers in the early 70′s. Over the years, I’ve owned (in a small business) maybe 40 or 50 desktops and laptops, including several Apple IIe’s way back when. I’ve always liked Apple products, but not used them due to the overwhelming prominence of DOS and Windows products (both software and hardware) and the excellent pricing of IBM clones.

But when the iPad came out, I couldn’t help myself. I now pick it up several times a day and use it. I’ve taken it on trips without a laptop. Here’s what I think, mostly.

Pros:
1. It’s cool. No avoiding it, the little fella is great looking and has that Apple minimalist approach to design that they do so well.
2. It’s tiny. Well, small, anyway. That’s good and maybe bad, but it does have its appeal.
3. Screen resolution seems creamy, silky smooth. Don’t know how they did it, and don’t really care. It’s good.
4. I love Apple’s approach to WiFi…. Walking into a new place, without even the slightest thought from you, the iPad finds an open connection and asks if you want to connect to it. If you say yes, you never hear from it again. Done. If the proper connection needs a WPA code or such, it simply asks for it. No fuss. (It seems like Windows, which I use for hours every day and have since it came out, has never really felt comfortable with wireless networking).
5. No keyboard. Well, face it, most of the time you don’t use one, anyway. Not having it is OK. No mouse, either, for that matter. Good.
6. Scrolling is a dream. Fabulous. Effortless. Scrolling, something that simple, is probably the single thing this little unit does best. You have to try it to understand it.
7. One of my apps (I don’t have many) is a flight simulator similar to MS Flight Simulator…. X-Plane. It allows pilots to practice instrument flying, so I got it. VERY cool. No joystick foolishness. You must rotate the iPad itself like you would a yoke and the airplane turns or climbs or descends, or whatever. Way easier than Windows products to do the same thing.
8. Pilot friends who use other apps for charts and such love it, so I would guess that all graphics applications work pretty well on the little system, though I haven’t tried. Oh, yeah, Google Maps and Earth and such look great, too. Apple always has done graphics well, so no real surprise.
9. Ditto for video.
10. Battery life is great. Days on end at my level of usage.
11. My Blackberry has a cute feature (maybe everyone has it, now): When typing an email address or URL, when one presses the space bar, the OS converts it to a @ or a period, whichever is appropriate. The iPad takes that to another level…. There is a ” ” key that enters that when pressed. A small thing, but more helpful than one might think on a device where typing ain’t as easy as using an IBM keyboard.

Cons:
1. It’s hard to hold and easy to drop. Needs a shell or something to protect it; that makes it as big as a netbook or small laptop, anyway.
2. Can’t keep several “windows” open at the same time to switch back and forth. Not a horrible issue, because you can get back to a previous window relatively easily, but sometimes you’d like to have both open at the same time or be able to switch with a single click. If there’s a way to do that I haven’t found it.
3. Hotmail and Gmail don’t work like they do on a laptop. Or on a Blackberry Storm2, for that matter. I don’t know the issue, but I can’t seem to find a way to send a new email (though it’s easy enough to reply). I’m sure there is some app or setting to fix it, but I really don’t want to be troubled with that. I just want it to work. Like the way WiFi does. (Since I wrote this, I actually went into the email setup and set it up; it works, but I would prefer to use Hotmail and Gmail as pure web based apps rather than something more akin to a cell phone feature, which, of course, it is).
4. You can’t print from it. I’ve read that there is a wireless printing feature in the next OS. Waiting to see.
5. When working with it in your lap, either in a chair or a recliner or bed, a laptop is just more well suited for the job. The iPad has to be held up, and, the screen is lower, so you are craning your neck more. I don’t use a stand to put it in. Things like that and the case to put it in detract from the advantage of small size, so you might as well use a small laptop which will make you happier in the long run for this sort of thing.
6. No keyboard. And don’t tell me they make a keyboard for it. If I have to buy that, I might as well get a laptop. Typing on the screen is a trip. If you use the virtual keyboard holding the iPad in the “landscape” position the keyboard is large, and a little awkward to span the keys with your thumb. So, you end up turning the iPad up to the “portrait” position where the keyboard is better suited to thumb-typing. I haven’t tried typing in the traditional way (“touch typing”)…. I just reach for the laptop. I’m using my Lenovo to type this review.
7. OK, here we go…. No Flash. Now, I don’t have a dog in this fight, but I don’t understand this. Every now and then (pretty often, actually) some video will come up and the iPad will tell me that it doesn’t do Flash. (Happens frequently on sports and news sites). I never even knew what Flash was before this issue came up. Well, Apple wants me to go to iTunes to download their app that will let you view Flash files. OK, y’all, why didn’t you just put it in the iPad from the get-go? I just want it to work. Yesterday, I wanted to watch a video of a Tropical Storm in the Caribbean, so I clicked on the link to go get Apple’s app. Then I had to cycle through a few pages on iTunes. Heck with it. I just used the laptop (which has a larger screen, anyway). There’s a saying: “People don’t want quarter inch drills, they want quarter inch holes. ”

So, what’s the upshot?

I like it. I’d buy it again. No, I wouldn’t wait for the Android competitors to come out. Well, I am curious about those and might get one of them, too, just to check it out. But, the WiFi-only iPad is a nice, polite little computer.

I do want to say this, and it’s one of those potentially inflammatory things, but I don’t mean it like that…. It’s more of a toy than a tool. If I am really in need getting things done…. Spreadsheets, presentations, documents, etc, it’s really hard to beat the tried and true Windows laptops that are available everywhere and are dirt cheap and fit in with the way things are done and the formats that are used throughout the business community.

So, sure I use it. This morning (a Sunday) I’ve been using it…. looking at airplanes for sale (daydreaming) and checking out a few football forums and generally surfing the web. So, if this review seems a bit too negative, that’s not really intended. I like it.

That said, a would-be buyer needs to understand what it is that he is getting, and what that is, is something of a media machine that requires you conform to Apple’s way of doing things, a very good little web surfboard and a pretty neat little toy.

This review is from: Apple iPad 2 MC769LL/A Tablet (16GB, WiFi, Black) (Personal Computers)
The biggest change in our lives so far with the arrival of our iPad 2 is now that we have three of them, no one is without an ipad 24/7. You wouldn’t think this would be a big deal but it is. It has eliminated all discord here plus the place is quiet as a tomb most of the time as each person is curled up with his own ipad. We are a husband and wife in our 60s plus my husband’s mother who is 100 years old. She is curled up with the iPad almost all day long as her ability to do anything active has all but vanished. She goes easily from reading a Danielle Steele ebook to watching a Prince William and Kate lifetime movie.

The above is both versions of the iPad’s biggest virtue: ANYONE OF ANY AGE CAN USE IT. Both my husband and I are techie types so we are quite expert on computers. Friends in our age range usually are not. My advice to every one of them is “buy an ipad.” It puts those with low tech abilities on an even playing field because they do everything with their fingers and visually. It is the supreme compliment to say about either iPad, “any idiot can use it.”

Right now you can’t buy an iPad 1. We were going to buy a third one of those on sale but they sold out so fast that we had to get the iPad 2 as our third one. My husband is the one who appreciates subtle refinements in electronics. He has been in seventh heaven since it arrived. Truthfully, my mother in law and I, as long as we can get on it and read our books, watch our movies, assemble recipes in our app cookbook, and so forth and so on, are happy as can be and both iPad versions do that extremely well. My husband is the one who waxes rhapsodically over lighter weight, better LED screen, improved battery life, and so forth. Like most reviewers of iPad 2 he concludes that it is a beautiful evolution but not a revolution from the first iPad.

For those of you with extended families elsewhere, there are other new features which could be huge features for you. The ability now to visit with family members by video with your ipad 2 are completely built in. It has two way cameras. I would like to talk our other family members in California into getting one for the benefit of my mother-in-law, who could have excellent “visits” by iPad with all of them.

Also if you want to stream what is on your ipad directly to your HDTV and projectors, that too is now built in. We don’t have such a tv because we like watching directly on the iPad itself with earphones.

There is also the ability to not only take your own videos but to edit them online. Plus the ability to locate your ipad if it is lost and to wipe its contents remotely.

These above new features are opening up a lot of possibilities for educators as well. Apple maintains an entire subsection on its website to helping educators use the new features to iPad 2 to best advantage. Essentially, it wants to enable them to use the iPad 2 to put its content onto a screen immediately in front of their students with the teacher controlling the whole thing with his or her fingers. Go over to Apple to check this all out as it is incredible.

I absolutely love the camera on the iPad 2. There was no camera on the iPad 1. Much as I have always loved my iPhone’s camera, and much as I complained about who would want to use a camera the size of the iPad 2, I admit I underestimated it. It is just a fabulous camera and with just pointing and shooting you take pictures that look as if a professional had taken them.

I also researched this cover that apple was pushing real hard. It looks great but i discovered the users were not happy with it. Turns out they have to clean their screens every time they use it because it leaves three big marks on the glass every time. They also said it was unstable as a stand and one guy smashed his ipad on the floor as a result, shattering it. Apple is not very good at these accessory devices. So we ordered the zoogue ipad 2 case and are very happy with it. We have zoogues on our other two ipads as well and are totally happy with them. Just put the word zoogue into search engines to find it.

The G-Slate is compatible with T-Mobile’s UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA+ 3G/4G network, which operates on the 1700/2100 MHz AWS spectrum, and it can achieve theoretical download speeds of up to 21 Mbps. It’s designed to automatically connect to the best available network (4G, 3G, or GSM/GPRS/EDGE) to provide faster data speeds when accessing the Web.

In areas where the 3G/4G network is not available, you’ll continue to receive service on the via T-Mobile’s EDGE network (which stands for “Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution”). With typical download speeds that are on par with or faster than competing 4G technologies, T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network provides fast data speeds–up to 3 times faster than AT&T and Verizon’s standard 3G networks–while allowing simultaneous voice and data capabilities for the ultimate wireless voice and data experience. You’ll enjoy faster Web browsing, uninterrupted video streaming, and quicker app downloads.

This review is from: T-Mobile G-Slate 4G Android Tablet (T-Mobile) (Wireless Phone Accessory)
I’d love to tell you all to believe the hype evident in these reviews (clearly paid for btw). Unfortunately, after having waited months longer than any other honeycomb tablet, LG pushed the honeycomb 3.1 OTA and locked our bootloaders, effectively killing all development on this otherwise impressive piece of hardware.

What can you expect from the LG G-Slate? ZERO support from LG, ZERO support from T-Mobile. No working Netflix. Want to move media between your PC and the slate? Stock suggested solution is doubletwist lol. We used to have CIFS and OpenVPN to access our SMB shares anywhere in the world. Now accessing all the great media in my collection is a pain. USB Host, an important feature of all other 3.1+ devices? DISABLED. Don’t bother with this overpriced junk, I purchased my unit for <$400 at a tmobile store and regret the day.

Signed,

An extremely disappointed customer.

ps: I have contacted my carrier regarding Lg’s decision to lock the bootloader and have been referred to the legal department twice.

BUY LG PRODUCTS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

This review is from: Apple iPad 2 MC769LL/A Tablet (16GB, WiFi, Black) (Personal Computers)
SUMMARY: White iPad 2 64GB Wifi-only
A really wonderful electronic device for media consumption with some moderate content creation potential. This will likely change as more apps focused on content generation are created. I find myself using it more and more simply because it is “always ready” and small enough that it is always near. If this device had a better file management system and a more robust way to share printers it would have gotten 5 out of 5 stars. As it is, the iPad 2 is a solid 4 star device.

DELIGHTERS (Current features that exceeded my expectations)
FORM FACTOR: Thin and comfortable to hold. Small enough to toss in a bag or carry around the house so you find yourself using rather than trying to “remember” to do “that thing” the next time you’re at your computer. Still has some weight to it (1.3lb) so prolonged reading in certain positions will cause fatigue.
APP ENVIRONMENT: Really excellent variety and quality of applications for a broad range of uses and a broad range of prices. Also plays nice with content providers like amazon kindle, Google docs, and lots of news outlets.
SLEEP MODE: It is seemingly “always ready” as it wakes from sleep very quickly.
HDMI OUT: Granted there is a $40 accessory required it is nice to have the option of showing what’s on your iPad 2 to a larger audience.
iOS: Overall the operating system is “cleanly” designed, features are easy to navigate and find.
PROCESSING SPEED: Remarkably quick to load apps, web pages, pdfs, etc.

SATISFIERS (Current features that met my expectation)
HOMESHARING: Being able to share my iTunes library (music, movies, podcast, etc) across my wifi network is wonderful and saves space on the iPad 2.
SCREEN: Bright, good touch sensitivity, “flips” between orientations well, handles pictures and text with aplomb.
PRICE: Reasonable considering the competition but nearly high enough to justify a “real” laptop
AUDIO: Speaker is quite good for a handheld device, placement in portrait mode ends up in your lap but you can invert the iPad so not a huge deal. Also speaker faces rear of device instead of forward meaning you need to crank it louder than maybe otherwise necessary if it were forward facing.
BATTERY LIFE: Battery holds up well even after a day of heavy usage, charges up easily over night. Can go 2-3 days without charging with moderate to light usage)
WIFI: This simply “works”. turn it on, detect a signal, and go. No messing around with complicated network settings.
ONSCREEN KEYBOARD: Its responsive and surprisingly easy to use. However, scrolling to a separate numbers keyboard and lack of a “tab” button really disrupts workflow.

DISSATISFIERS (Current features that did not meet my expectations)
FILE MANAGEMENT: File management on the iPad is Byzantine. You use iTunes to “attach” files to apps or email them?
PRINTING: Unless you have an AirPrint capable printer (new hardware to buy) or one of a handful other printers you will need to use the atrocious “file management” system above to get the docs on you computer to print. Double whammy of pain!
CAMERAS: The two cameras are adequate for video chatting but taking stills is a joke. True I wouldn’t want to shoot a lot of birthdays holding an iPad but I would like to use a program like “GeniusScan” to photograph documents for later reference. The 0.7Megapixel camera is capable of “barely legible” documents.
COST PER GB: Paying >$3 per GB ($100 more for 64GB than 32GB) is nearly twice what you’d pay per GB for the difference in a stand-alone USB thumbdrive.
TOUCH NAVIGATION: Ok so this is a general criticism of any touch device and there is no way to get around it really. Having “grown up” using keyboards and mice to interface with computers I am having to learn how to do tasks differently. Press-Hold, Swipe, Two vs Three fingers. All for tasks I was so used to doing with a Tab or Right-click.

WISHLIST (features I’d like to see in the next-gen iPad)
Touchscreen: The capacitive screen works fine for many things but writing notes with a “fat” stylus isn’t one of them. Having a touch screen that doesn’t require the “fat” stylus would greatly improve handwriting and note taking.
USB or SD Card ports (never gonna happen as Apple uses memory as a price differentiator but it doesn’t hurt to dream)
Retina display
Infrared receiver/transmitter (Can anyone say universal remote!)
GPS
Cheaper 3G antenna: $130 bucks extra for a 3G receiver plus I gotta buy a plan? ugh.
Smartcover: Would like to see this included in the price of the device

This review is from: Acer Aspire One AO722-0473 11.6-Inch HD Netbook (Espresso Black) (Personal Computers)
I had never considered buying a Netbook before, but this little baby performs very well. I love the screen. 11.6 inches is just right. The full size keyboard is also great. The full 64-bit version of Windows 7 is also very nice to have.
If I have any complaint, it would be that the sound through the built-in speakers is a little weak.

I decided to upgrade from 2GB of RAM to 4GB as many have suggested. I knew this would improve performance and help with battery life as well, since there would be less hard disk thrashing. I visited the Acer website and found that this computer supports up to 4GB of PC3 8500 RAM in a single DDR3 memory slot. I opened the back cover and found that it was using 2GB of PC3-10600 RAM. So I found myself in a dilemma. Do I purchase 4GB of PC3-8500 or 4GB of PC3-10600? The 8500 has slightly lower latency but also slower data throughput than the 10600. But if the netbook only uses the 8500 clock-rate, then it shouldn’t matter which one I get. The scientist in me decided to buy both kinds and benchmark the performance of each. Here is my experiment:

Baseline – Acer netbook with original 2GB of PC3-10600 RAM
Upgrade 1 – Acer netbook with 4GB of Kingston PC3-8500 RAM (cost $20)
Upgrade 2 – Acer netbook with 4GB of G.Skill PC3-10600 RAM (cost $20)

I ran two different benchmarks in each case:
Benchmark 1 – Windows Experience Index, Memory Score
Benchmark 2 – PCMark7 Basic Score

Results:
. . . . . . Benchmark 1 . Benchmark 2
Baseline . . . 5.1 . . . . 626 PCMarks
Upgrade1 . . . 5.2 . . . . 668 PCMarks
Upgrade2 . . . 5.2 . . . . 648 PCMarks

I ran the tests several times and the PCMark7 results changed a little each time, but generally with similar results. Looks like the netbook memory clock rate is set at the 8500 timings (1066 MHz) and does not increase to 1333 MHz in the presence of 10600 memory. The results also indicate that the PC3-8500 Kingston memory outperforms the PC3-10600 G.Skill memory, but only slightly. Seeing that prices for the two are the same, go for the PC3-8500 RAM.

This review is from: HP Slate 500 8.9″ Black (Personal Computers)
August 2011 Update
1.Great news Microsoft appears to be hearing the cry’s of the people to create an amazing tablet user interface. Check out the youtube titled “Building “Windows 8″ – Video #1.” The rumor is that Microsoft will try to make windows 8 compatible with machines running windows 7. The key issue with this HP Tablet is the screen resolution. From Wikipedia “The new interface is primarily designed for 16:9 screen resolutions, with 1366?768 and larger screens able to display two Windows 8 applications. 1024?768 screens can display one Windows 8 application in full-screen, and 1024?600 screens can only use the traditional Windows desktop.” The HP slate runs 1024 x 600 as its native resolution but it can run 1024 x768. So the hope is that the HP Slate will be able to run windows 8 and the future software that will be written for windows 8.
2. Increase the scroll bars (making them fatter) can help improve the windows 7 user interface. Sometimes the scroll bar is covered by the leather case but by making the scroll bar fatter you can move up and down web pages a little easier.
Right-click on desktop, select Personalize.Click on “Window Color” and then “Advanced appearance settings.” In he drop-down list choose scrollbar (or click on the scrollbar in the picture) and finally change the size. Check the entire drop-down list for the items you wish customize by size and fonts.
3. Swiftpoint SM300 Laptop Mouse works well with the tablet. It is small, comfortable and portable. The rollerball allows for better scrolling with large documents and more intense work. Again, just plug and play usb device.
4.Rotating your screen 180: You can switch horizontal sides so that the AC Plug is on the top of the device instead of the bottom when charging. Right-click on the desktop, click “Graphic Options” then “Rotation” and choose your side. 180 flips it. You can also change this in the control panel, “Display” “Change Display Settings” “Orientation”
5. HP Slate continues to be stable: Noticed other new windows slate devices were having trouble with their operating system with bugs and shutting down. My HP may freeze up just as typical as windows 7 laptops. Otherwise it is very stable. Pressing the CTRL Alt Delete (all-in-one) button on the side of the slate seems to break up any frozen screens.

So would I continue to buy HP 500 (August 2011)?
Still to this date. IPADS are not standalone computer, don’t have flash video capabilities, needs lots of apps to fill in for office, and no plug-n-play with devices (only those built for IPAD), missing drivers to many printers. Android may be better than IPAD as it does have Flash video, the ability to store documents (file system) and sd/micro sd expansion. HP 500 is a windows 7 computer with a slower “not snazzy” tablet user interface but now with the hope for windows 8 if the device can be upgraded. But what does Apple have for IPAD3 and when will it be released, October or now 2012? Presently, when I travel, I don’t want two devices, I would buy the HP 500 still, with the potential delay of IPAD 3 and Windows 8 without a release date, the HP remains the travel companion that allows for relaxation (music, movies)play, intense work (stand alone office (no cloud connection needed) and security (known/free virus protection).
Happy tableting!

Start of old review.

I have had my tablet for the past month plus. I am a heavy tablet user and have had tablets for the past 5 years. (Motion Computing, Lenovo convertible). I thought hard about buying the IPAD, I held back and I was so happy that I did. Everyone, I talk to that has an IPAD says that it does not do what a computer does. I am tired of getting an item and finding out that I have to find all of the work arounds (extra apps) to do what my slate does for me. I am a heavy pc user and have found that this tablet has replaced my Lenovo Convertible tablet. I use my HP to get my work done, surface the web, enjoy movies, listen to music and then get out and ENJOY LIFE by moving around and socializing with real people!
PROS:
1.WEIGHT: HP Slate weighs 1.5 lbs with the pen and nice case 1 lb 10oz. Any item that gets to 2 lbs is too heavy to carry. The screen is big enough to do work. I think the power cable is 9oz?? Most newer tablets are pushing 3lbs which is the SAME as a LAPTOP. A Laptop, that lasting 2hrs forces you to carry the power cable 1lb, too heavy to carry in your bag.
2.Your Software works: NO finding work arounds and converting file formats from Android/IPAD
3.No DVD drive: I have a portable DVD drive so I plugged it in, the driver installed. But for software, you can download the trial versions off the web and then use your key to unlock your programs
3.Windows 7 Professional: Quick, seems as fast as my Lenovo Convertible Tablet. But I have not done heavy work such as video editing on this machine. I have had 7 programs opened and have not had any problems in speed.
4. Office 2010: Word works great, PowerPoint awesome, OneNote wonderful. Excel as usual. But I haven’t pushed EXCEL or the other software in the bundle yet.
5.Other Favorites: Snippingtool: Lets you take a picture of anything on your screen; Cutepdf: Free pdfprinter on line; Freemind Mindmap, Stickies, Picasa to alter photos
5. Free AVG or AVAST Antivirus
6. Printer: Set up your PC printer as usual. Lexmark 901 wireless. Downloaded the driver from the website and installed. I suspect my other printers will install as this is windows.
7. Web Browsing: Explorer or Mozilla. All my web programs work, gotomeeting, toodledo .
8. FLASH YES, Youtube, HULU, watch my favorite shows online.
9. SD Memory Card: Can upload your photos from you camera. Have a 32GB ($50). Increases memory from built-in 60GB to 92GB. So much can be stored in the cloud which frees up space on the tablet.
10.USB slot: Plug and play my CURRENT Windows items. Drivers are there. USB Mouse, microphones, storage drives, phone charger. No searching the web looking for a work around with my existing tech gadgets. Many items running android and IPAD do not have the drivers for accessories
11.Wireless: I have no problems connecting at work, starbucks, coffee shops, home.
Bluetooth: Connected my old Foldout Stowaway keyboard (didn’t have to spend another $100). Figured out how connect my jawbone but the sound quality is not great to listen to music. Probably ok for Skype calls.
12.MIC/Headset/Speakers: The Speakers are loud enough to listen for personal use in a room similar to a hotel room. They don’t have base but they are not as tinty as some can sound. When you plug in a good speaker or headset the sound is great. The internal MIC is fine for Skype calls or recording such as on ONENOTE.
13.SKYPE: Works fine. It was hard for the Skype to detect the camera. I got frustrated and tried to install my Logitech external webcam. When I did this, Skype then saw the HP cameras. In the Skype settings, video you can select the camera because you have a front and back. If you use a Bluetooth headset, first connect the headset using the windows Bluetooth icon, “Add a Device.” If you wish to only listen and speak using your Bluetooth, you have to “disable” your default speakers, open the “horn” icon, right click on the “playback”, select the speakers, right click, select disable. This will force the sound into your headset only. Then go into the Skype audio settings and choose the Bluetooth mic and speaker. The video camera works but you will need high speed to really get good video quality.
14.Battery Life: Last for 5 hrs. I can go to meetings and sit in coffee shops for hours until I need to plug in. Before with a laptop, I could only last 1-2 hrs.
15.Camera quality is fair. It doesn’t get moving people as well. If it is a stationary item it does ok. The video works also. I get better quality on my SPRINT EVO. The camera is nice to capture something quick to add into a document.
So, this is how I use my tablet.
I go to 3 hr meetings, record information using the stylus or type using my foldout keyboard. I go to a preschool sites (evaluate safety and nutrition). Hook into their wireless or Tether to SPRINTEVO (haven’t needed to yet), get reports, take photos of what I see if necessary, write notes on my ONENOTE, printpdf the report, send it to the teacher by email. She prints the document if necessary. Other instances, I can complete a surveymonkey as a report gathering tool and submit it. I have training video, I can show a teacher on the spot. I go to a coffee shop with free wireless, plug in my headset (Pandora), plug in my wireless mouse, pull out the Bluetooth keyboard and use office and answer emails. I could also make SKYPE Calls if needed. Go back to the office, plug into my screen (see below) and it becomes a regular computer. For movies, I use to copy my DVDs that I purchased with software and loaded them on to my portable hard drives and download the movies that I want to see. But I just watch online (remember flash).

Why buy this device if I have to pull out all of the extra gadget (keyboard, mouse). It’s because of the weight. I can walk around with just the slate comfortably when I want or need to which you can’t do with a netbook or laptop.

Workarounds
No VGA port: There is HDMI on the docking station. HP please find a spot on the device, then I don’t need to carry the dock and preferably on the short side. I bought the HP HDMI to VGA converter for $39 in the HP Home section. It works with old VGA ports. You need the converter for VGA as you are going from digital back to analogue. But many projectors and TVs are HDMI or DVI (HDMI without the sound). You can get an adapter for HDMI to DVI for projectors too. You might need a 3.5 audio to cable out. I never use the speakers from a projector. I have external speakers which provide better quality or I feed into the AV System. Used the HDMI cable with a projector and it was beautiful. You could project your movies or use it as a large screen. I am sure if you were in a hotel, carry your HDMI and plug into the Flat screen, carry your Bluetooth keyboard and work from bed. Or show your personal movies for yourself or kids.

No Ethernet: I don’t use my Ethernet much. Yes my Agency has this but doesn’t let us plug our personal items into their system. There is a HP USB to ethernet adapter for $39 if this is a needed.

Stylus: You will need 4AAAA batteries. BEWARE; I scratched the screen with the stylus. It is a quarter inch scratch. Don’t know how it happened. I don’t see it when the screen is on.
Screen: Nice Glass. The case is designed to accommodate the cameras. I flip it around in the case when I want to stand the HP like a Teepee. The bummer is when you plug in and don’t have the dock you have to prop it up against a bag. You can only rotate the screen on two sides where other tablets let your rotate to any side. It is true that the leather can get in the way on the side to move scroll bars. But learn how to use the “FLICK” setting and you don’t need the scroll bars. I still use my key commands of CTRL + or – to increase or decrease the screen. The finger zoom is not as good as newer device.

Screen set up. Because your palm can rest on the bottom part of the screen, I set my windows taskbar on the top screen instead of the bottom so I don’t open the Clock by accident. I also docked the INPUT panel on the task bar. When it is docked on the sides, it can block items. Learn how to go use your “Flick” settings which help you use your fingers on the tablet. Also, right click on the N Trig DuoSense Pen Icon in the taskbar tray, select properties. Here you can turn off the capacitive screen and use only the pen such as in ONENOTE or Windows JOURNAL. So you can rest your palm of your hand on the screen and it won’t draw scribbly lines.

Overall, this was the best purchase technology wise that I have made in years. I have invested much to try out new tech gadgets. This does it all. It is not perfect in the touch screen interface but it is an improvement from the earlier tablets. Yes, it cost more ~$850 but I don’t have to buy more apps and I can use what I have from my windows computers. In the end, it is what the tablet CAN DO that matters.
HP, you have a winner. I wish you went toe-to-toe with the IPAD, you could have punched hard! Don’t do what Microsoft always does. Create something good and then let another company create and market another product off their original good creation. It’s the size, screen, weight and operating system! If you don’t like it, return it. It took me 2.5 months to get mine because they sold out. I am sure someone will want to buy it off you.

Conclusion:
Weight 1.5 lbs, battery life 5 hrs, no workaround apps, uses my current windows gadgets, prints to printers, usb and SD Memory, Outputs to projectors and monitors using HDMI, wireless, bluetooth, can tether to Phone hotspots. It truly replaces my Laptop for light Office work and entertainment.
This is all I carry now. Computer, tablet (alter graphics, draw, SIGN Legal Documents), DVD Player, MP3 Player, Camera, Video Camera, Phone Skype, Memory Storage, Scanner (take a photo of your document), FAX (use online faxes by attaching documents)

3 Months to date: Still Love my HP Slate.
Issues:
-Slightly slower than my laptop. For an Atom processor, I am still impressed.
-The touch interface is not as responsive as the android (the nook) or Ipad. I might have to click twice or use my pen. The pinch and zoom is not as smooth where I don’t use it often.
-The Stylus is slippery and slipped out my hand and. The tip bent. I was able to order another on from the HP Parts department. Each stylus cost $45. I purchased 2, so if I lose one, I have a backup. You have to use the HP Stylus because N-TRIG is designed for the slate. I also purchased a cheap plastic pen cushion to have better grip.
-Major issue: After updating explorer, something happened and the tablet started up, asking to choose safe mode or normal in that Old “dos” looking screen. Since I can only pull up the keyboard when windows 7 is loaded when the desktop is showing, I couldn’t select my option. I tried to shutdown7 but it restarted to the same screen. I plugged in a USB keyboard and was able to choose “start windows” using the arrow keys and windows 7 booted normally. So the issue is with tablets you need to have access to a usb-keyboard for emergency. I leave on old one in my car
Why do I still love it?
-Watch my shows that I missed. CBS runs better in the Google Chrome browser. Converted my videos to watch when I want to. Used the HDMI cable and the output looks awesome. But I did use my Tower Desktop to convert the video. Don’t know how the tablet would perform with intense number crunching.
-Storage Space: 60 GB on Hard drive. 30GB on my SD Memory. So I have 90GB. I had to download a ton of photos when I didn’t have internet access.
-Plug and Play Printing. I needed to print something at work, so I just plugged in my retractable USB printer cable. Windows installed the driver automatically and I was ready. When I traveled last month, I realized when I was at the computer center of the hotel, I could have just plugged into that printer and probably printed. It’s nicer to just work on my own computer for security purposes rather than signing in and downloading a document on the hotels computer.
-Security: Updates to Windows 7 Professional and Free AVG are done on a regular basis. Security is just beginning to be addressed on the android platform.
-Cost. $850, plus extra stylus $45, $39 HDMI to VGA Adapter, $50 for 32GB SD Card, reused $100 Bluetooth keyboard, $45 extra ac adapter. It is about $1000 but it is so worth it.
Most Android or IPADs require you to have another computer. I still use only my HP. I plug it into my screen, use my Bluetooth Keyboard and plug in my USB Wireless mouse and I forget that I have a tablet and I now working off a desktop.

Happy tableting!

This review is from: Archos 80 G9 8GB – Classic (Personal Computers)
For the price, nothing can compete with this spec for spec.

Key differentiator here is that it’s an Archos and can thus play a variety of video formats right out of the box: eg: divx, xvid, etc.

HDMI out, 1 ghz dual core, 2 USB ports, 3g stick capable, built in kick stand (this has proven to be very useful).

pros:
-honeycomb 3.2
-beautiful screen
-ports
-good battery life
-nice archos native apps
-kickstand
-can play divx and xvid out of the box!
-pay like 10-15 for an archos plugin that plays AC3 audio (does any tablet anywhere play this audio format???)

cons:
-doesnt have the build quality feel of an ipad or galaxy (doesnt have their price tags either)
-has locked up on me a few times, but nothing a reset cant handle
-very difficult to find accessories (I did a custom cut Invisible Shield skin-like installation on it)
-sometimes HDMI out freezes

the only thing i’m not sure of is whether ice cream sandwich will get ported on this thing… i really dont feel like rooting it.

Update: Archos has confirmed that this will be updated to Ice Cream Sandwich making this one of the most future proof tablets on the market.

Update2: I’ve now played with this for awhile as well as a Asus Transformer (not Prime) and an HTC Evo View (gingerbread, 7in, same as HTC Flyer), as well as an IPAD2. I have to say, dollar for dollar this thing stands up to the field. Transformer and IPAD2 blew me away (but i think that’s just the sheer size and the resolution). The HTC Evo View was surprising spry with the 7inch size, but the ratio was not optimal for movies.

In terms of the archos:
-8in is not perfect for eBook reading in bed (but perfect for the coffee table with the kickstand).
-512 ram is not enough. But, i can’t decide if it’s the TI processor or the ram or simply Honeycomb. Bottom line is that sometimes i feel like i need to defrag this thing so i reboot it (and that works). I cant say definitively what is causing the lag and delays, b/c this is Unix based with Java apps vs Windows. So, I’m not technical enough to understand the garbage collection and RAM management. Just reboot this thing everyday or so, and you should be fine
-tested the USB port below with my verizon 3g stick and cant get it to work
-was however, able to power all my external drives with it! including a 2.5 5400 with no power supply (trick is to reboot with drive plugged in)
-tested the HDMI out… Awesome but sensitive, if u move around too much and it loosens, signal will freeze (this could also be due to cable quality)
-USB charger is standard so i can charge it with my various cell phone chargers (in the car, with random USB chargers strewn thru my house)
-Flash on honeycomb has been fun as it allows me to play some flash based games. But set your expectations: this is a 1ghz machine running 512 ram. Flash can be a hog and thus, dont expect the same performance as your 2ghz duo core laptop.

All in all, i still love this thing. I recommend it for your starter tablet or the one u throw in your bag and hit the coffeeshop with. However, after feeling the build quality of some of the others, I’m now definitely getting the Asus Transformer Prime (upgradeable RAM!?).

This review is from: Apple iPad 2 MC773LL/A Tablet (16GB, Wifi + AT&T 3G, Black) NEWEST MODEL (Personal Computers)
If you’re considering a tablet, the only rational choice is the iPad 1 or the iPad 2. Anything else you there is too expensive/too buggy/lacking support/etc. As someone who owns a desktop but no laptop, the iPad 2 is just perfect. A laptop would often be redundant, though it would be handy for working outside of the home. With the iPad, I will use it all the time both in the home and elsewhere.

I will try to add some comments that haven’t been covered:

* I find that 16gb is fine, though this may change if app sizes get much larger. I don’t intend to store my music or a bunch of videos on this. Videos can be streamed, or added as-needed, and I rely on DropBox to store files – it lets me view and edit files between my desktop and my iPad.

* Part of the reason the iPad is perfect for travel is that you can use it in any position, unlike a laptop, where you have to find a seat.

* It won’t ever got hot or overheat. Personally, I’ve had a couple laptops expire on me due to overheating. You always have to keep them on a firm surface so you don’t block the vents. The iPad doesn’t have these problems (I think that the Macbook Airs similarly will never overheat). You no longer have to grab a tray or giant book to set your laptop on when using it in bed.

* Terrific value. All hype aside, the design, durability and capability of an iPad 2 is such that I would expect to pay much more. You can find a cheap laptop for the same price, and it will be capable of much more. However, the iPad will accomplish 95% of what you want to do on a computer, and will open doors (via apps) to new and totally unexpected experiences.

* Browsing the web is better on the iPad. At least, it often is. It’s certainly better to take your iPad on the couch than to hunch over a laptop on the coffee table. Though the screen is small compared to a desktop screen, it’s equivalent to working on a bigger screen because of how close you will be. Scrolling and navigating a webpage with your hand is a qualitatively better experience than using the tools we’ve become accustomed to (mouse, trackball or trackpad). I guess that’s why sci-fi movies always depict computers with touch interfaces in the future. Moving the page around and adjusting the size of everything by hand never gets old.

* Just like with my iPhone 4, I rarely sync my iPad 2. I’m not a huge fan of iTunes. I can sync occasionally to back-up my apps. I don’t use iTunes to manage files (again, I rely on Dropbox). Dropbox and Evernote are must-have apps on all my computers and portable devices.

* Safari can use some work. I prefer the tabbed browsing, not having to switch windows. There are some alternative browsers (I bought 360 Browser, which is good), but Apple won’t let me select those as my default browser. I don’t use Safari on my desktop, but even if I wanted to sync my passwords and history, I don’t think it’ll let me (it will sync bookmarks through iTunes though). I really wish Apple would loosen up so that Firefox or Chrome would be available, and that one of those could be my default.

* As cool as the smart cover is, I spent my money on a wireless keyboard instead. I really don’t think the smart cover is going to make a difference as long as I take other measures to protect my screen. I may skip the HDMI adapter as well – it would be fun, but there is never a time that I will need to project my iPad on my HDTV.

In summary, if you think you’d like it, you’ll probably love it. If you are just kinda curious but content with your current set-up, you can save yourself the money. For the same price, you can get an adequate laptop running Windows 7. I think this is a great alternative though.
